KUALA LUMPUR: Power and water supplies have been reconnected to five quarters that were not affected by Saturday’s cave-in at Lorong Gelugor here.
Federal Territories Minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, who rushed to the scene at 6.50pm yesterday from KL International Airport, said at least the lives of five families were back to normal.
He said the developer of Kenanga Wholesale City, which is beside the narrow road that caved in, should bear the cost of housing the 18 families who were evacuated from the damaged City Hall and Public Works Department quarters. They are staying in nearby hotels for at least three days.
Cheras Umno division head Datuk Said Ali Alhabshee, who was also at the scene, said RM500 would be given to each of the affected families.
On Saturday evening, residents said they heard a loud noise at about 6pm and noticed that a section of Lorong Gelugor, measuring 60m long and 12m wide, had caved in. The Kenanga Wholesale City project’s wall had also collapsed.
Initial investigations by the authorities and JKR revealed that an underground water pipe had burst when excavation works were being carried out for the project’s three-level basement car park.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail said DBKL had imposed a temporary stop-work order on the project from Saturday night, pending the completion of the report on the official cause of the cave-in.
